Remember that "crazy-in-love" feeling you had when you first met your spouse? When I met Duane I couldn't even sleep at night! Somehow I KNEW he was the one! I would think about him all the time- I could hardly get any studying done for my college classes. It was insane! I was literally CRAZY in love with that man!
It's really a blessing that God gives us that "lovey-dovey" feeling at the beginning of a marriage relationship. That in-love feeling is like a fire that begins to burn in your soul and ignites a love that you never even knew existed before! It's as if God starts the fire for you and brings the wood to make the love burn so bright and pure in the beginning. But if you've been married for any length of time you know that "crazy-in-love" feeling just doesn't last. AND it's a GOOD thing that it doesn't! If it did, we'd never get anything done or get any sleep just like we did when we first met our spouses!
God starts the fire, but it's our job to continue to keep that fire going. We have to go and gather the "wood" for it to continue to burn bright and pure like it did in the beginning. So how do you do that in the midst of a busy life of kids, careers, and grown-up responsibilities? Prayer is a key.
Every wife would agree that she wants a good marriage. No woman marries a man thinking that her marriage is not important. Prayer for our spouses each day can help bring the wood that is needed to keep our marriages burning fresh, special, and alive.
A while back I wrote a posting about praying for our children each day and even gave a list of specific prayers. I got several emails in response to that posting, so today I'll post several specific prayers for wives to pray for their husbands. These are taken from prayer cards available through FamilyLife Today and all of them are based directly on scripture.
Specific prayers for wives to pray over their husbands-
1) Give my husband time to know his family and a passion to manage his home effectively.
2) Show him today how to honor you in his attitude and confirm his work to your purpose.
3) Instruct him and teach him in the way he should go and give him integrity in decisions he has to face today.
4) I pray he will love you with all his heart, soul, mind and strength.
5) Give him a desire to model a godly lifestyle for our children.
6) Protect him today physically, spiritually, and mentally.
6) I pray he'll be a wise steward of our money remembering that everything we have is from your hand.
7) I pray he will meditate on your Word today and pray without ceasing.
8) Help me to make myself attractive for him and show me how to love him as I should.
9) Help me to know how to make our home a place where he can find peace, safety, and relaxation.
10) I give all my expectations to you, Lord. I release my husband from fulfilling me in any areas where I should be looking to you for fulfillment.
Prayer is a gentle but powerful tool in every area of our lives- especially in our marriages. If your marriage has lost the fire it once had, keep praying and be patient. Sometimes it takes time for God to heal. Remember, you are both imperfect people.
My person goal with Duane is for God to make me into a godly woman that he can be proud to call his wife. And believe me friend, even after 20 years of marriage I'm a MAJOR work in progress!
